Upper North Shore

Family Lawyers for the Upper North Shore

We advise families from Wahroonga, Pymble, St Ives, Turramurra, Killara, Lindfield, Gordon and Roseville on separation, property, parenting and estate planning. We have no suburban office: clients meet us at the St James Trust Building in the city, or by video from home.

Why a city firm

A little distance helps

The Upper North Shore is a place of long-established families, leafy streets and deep community ties. Families have often lived in the same suburb for decades, their children attend schools a few streets apart, and the local professional community is closely connected. It is a wonderful place to raise a family, and a difficult place to separate quietly.

That is why many Upper North Shore clients choose a firm in the city. Our city office is far enough from home to offer genuine privacy, yet only a train ride away. We also meet by video, so you can take advice from your own study without anyone knowing you have spoken to a lawyer.

Matters we see

The questions Upper North Shore families bring to us

Long marriages and substantial asset pools
Many of our clients from Wahroonga, Pymble and Killara have been married for twenty years or more. Their property pools commonly include a large family home held for many years, superannuation built over long careers, share portfolios, and sometimes investment or holiday properties. In long marriages, contributions are often assessed as broadly equal overall, and the real debate is about future needs, the treatment of superannuation, and who keeps the family home. See property settlement and our guide to superannuation splitting.

One high earner, one career paused
Where one partner stepped back from a career to raise children, questions of spousal maintenance and adjustments for future needs are often central.

Teenagers and older children
Many separating Upper North Shore families have teenage children at independent schools. Parenting arrangements must respect older children's views, protect their schooling and deal fairly with school fees. See parenting and custody.

Estate planning for the next generation
Grandparents and parents often ask us how to protect family wealth for grandchildren if a child's own marriage fails. Testamentary trusts and carefully structured gifts and loans are the usual tools. See wills and estate planning.

Frequently asked

Questions from families in the Upper North Shore

Why would an Upper North Shore family use a city family lawyer?

Mainly for privacy and depth. Clients tell us they prefer not to discuss a separation with a local practice connected to their school or social circle, and that they want a firm focused on complex family law. Our office are an easy train or Metro trip away, and video meetings avoid the journey entirely.

How do I get to your office from Wahroonga or Pymble?

North Shore line trains run from Wahroonga, Pymble, Gordon and Lindfield to Wynyard and Town Hall. Alternatively, change at Chatswood for Sydney Metro to Martin Place or Gadigal, each a short walk from 185 Elizabeth Street.

We have been married for over 25 years. How does the length of the marriage affect property?

In long marriages, the court often treats the parties' contributions as broadly equal overall, recognising homemaking and parenting alongside income. Future needs (such as age, health and earning capacity) then become important. Every case still depends on its facts.

Our children are at boarding school or university. Are parenting orders still relevant?

Parenting orders apply to children under 18, and older teenagers' views carry significant weight. For children at boarding school, arrangements usually focus on holidays, exeats and decision-making. For adult children in tertiary study, the court can in some cases order maintenance to help them complete their education.

Should I update my will when I separate?

Yes. Separation does not revoke a will or change superannuation nominations, and a spouse may still benefit until a divorce is finalised. We coordinate estate planning with your family law matter.
